The 2027 emails have already started landing at our desk. Every year they arrive a little earlier, and every year the same confusion comes with them: how can I book a boat for a season whose schedule barely exists yet, what do I actually pay now, and what happens to my money between here and departure? Booking a Komodo sailing a year out is a genuinely different transaction from booking one for next month — different deposit structure, different risks, and a different set of questions you should ask before anything is wired. Here is how we walk clients through it.
How far out do Komodo departure calendars actually publish?
Shared-trip boats work off fixed annual calendars. The better-run operators publish a full year of departures at a time — many Komodo shared trips run on a weekly rhythm out of Labuan Bajo, commonly departing on Fridays with morning hotel pickup — and the following year’s table typically appears in the second half of the preceding year. So if you are here in mid-2026 and want a specific 2027 shared departure, the realistic move is to register interest now and deposit the moment the table publishes, because the first buyers get first choice of cabin.
Private charters are simpler and harsher: the calendar is just the hull’s diary. There is no release date. A 2027 week is open until someone pays a deposit on it, at which point it is gone. This is why full-boat groups — families, dive clubs, incentive trips — are the ones booking furthest ahead, and why the best weeks on the best-known boats disappear a year or more out.
The year-ahead deposit ladder, explained
For departures inside the current year, the standard Komodo structure is a 50% deposit to secure the booking, with the balance due no later than 30 days before departure. Book less than 30 days out and you are usually paying in full immediately.
Book a full year ahead and the structure changes to a three-step ladder: roughly 30% down at booking, 20% more once you are 120 days out, and the remaining balance by 30 days before departure. That is the ladder Komodo Luxury publishes, and it mirrors what we see across the harbour. The logic is fair on both sides — the operator locks your hull and date without demanding half the money a year early, and you spread the outlay across three predictable payments instead of two lumpy ones.
Three warnings that apply almost everywhere in this market. First, deposits are treated as non-refundable once the booking is registered — assume this even if a salesperson sounds flexible on the phone. Second, a date change is frequently processed as if you cancelled and rebooked, not as a free move. Third, some terms allow a substitute traveller to take your place if you genuinely cannot go; that clause is worth more than it looks, so confirm in writing whether your boat offers it.
Which months sell out first
Komodo’s dry season spans April into October; June, July, August and September are the crunch. In our experience the sell-out order for a new year looks like this: late-July and August full-boat charters go first, followed by the Christmas–New Year week, then Easter, then the remaining June and September charters. Shared-trip cabins hold availability longer — in shoulder months you can often still find space a month or two from sailing — but the exception is the master cabin, of which most phinisi carry exactly one. If your trip depends on the single balcony suite in the first week of August, you are effectively in the same queue as the full-charter buyers, and you should behave accordingly.

What a 2027 deposit locks — and what it doesn’t
A deposit locks the things that matter most: the hull, the date, and the cabin or charter package. It does not lock everything. Entrance and ranger costs inside the park are set by the regulator, not by operators; they shift without much notice and are invoiced separately — no honest desk will hand you a fixed park fee a year in advance, so treat any such number with suspicion. Itineraries are always weather- and park-authority-dependent; the route matrix you book is an intention, not a contract. And most operators state that published rates hold only for their issue year and are subject to annual revision — so before you wire anything, ask in writing how a rate revision between booking and departure would be handled on your file. A clear answer to that one question tells you a great deal about the desk you are dealing with.
Our checklist before you send a year-ahead deposit
This is the list we run with every forward booking, and it takes ten minutes:
- Put all three ladder dates in your own calendar the day you book — the 120-day instalment is the one people forget, and missed instalments can void a booking.
- Get the cancellation schedule in writing. Terms vary by boat and sometimes even conflict between sections of the same website; the safe planning assumption is a lost deposit in every cancellation scenario, with forfeiture close to departure reaching 100%.
- Confirm whether a replacement guest can be nominated if you cannot travel.
- Remember that bank charges sit with the sender — the operator must receive the invoiced figure in full, so gross up your transfer.
- Screenshot the published rate and terms on the day you book, so any later revision conversation starts from evidence.
