Quick Answer

Komodo is famous among divers for two things: current and big life. For snorkelers, it is more about clear shallow reefs, turtles, and — with luck — manta rays.

Almost all trips fall into two clear categories: Bali–Komodo liveaboards from Benoa Harbour (longer cruises, usually 7–12 days, often with multiple dive days), and short Labuan Bajo–Komodo trips of 1–4 days reached via a short flight.
On the longer trips, diving and snorkeling are often the core product. You sleep on board, wake up near new dive sites every day, and the vessel acts as a floating dive resort.
The upside of a liveaboard: more gradual progression into Komodo currents, plenty of time to rest, and more variety in dive profiles.
Even on snorkel-only trips, the crew will brief you on currents, drop-in points, and pick-up signals.

The Sites

Key Sites: Padar, Komodo, Pink Beach, Manta Point, Kelor & Dive Hotspots

Every operator arranges routes slightly differently, but most trips from Labuan Bajo and Bali try to include a mix of landscapes and underwater highlights.

Padar Island

Padar is about the hike and the panorama rather than diving. Divers sometimes overnight nearby to position for morning dives in central Komodo, but you usually visit Padar for sunrise or early morning before it gets hot.

Landscape, not a dive site

Komodo Island (and Rinca)

The ranger-guided dragon walk is the land highlight on both islands, and the surrounding reefs give divers and snorkelers easy access to central Komodo sites between treks.

Ranger-guided treks

Pink Beach

A shallow coral garden snorkel straight off the sand, in two to five metres of clear water — the best easy-access reef in the park and ideal for first-time snorkelers.

Easy-access reef

Manta Point

Guided drift-style snorkeling over the cleaning stations. The boat usually follows your group’s surface marker buoy while you drift. Currents can be strong, which is exactly what brings the rays in.

Surface marker buoy drift

Kelor Island

A short, steep hike plus easy snorkeling from the beach or boat — the standard warm-up stop on the way out of Labuan Bajo.

Signature dive sites

Komodo’s best-known dive sites — places like Batu Bolong and Castle Rock — are current-driven and deserve a dedicated dive itinerary. Divers seeking those profiles should book a dive-focused liveaboard rather than a general snorkel tour.

The Day

What Diving and Snorkeling Actually Look Like

Typical dive day rhythm

06:00–07:00 light breakfast and dive briefing for Dive 1. Morning: 1–2 dives, often current-sensitive sites when conditions allow. Lunch and rest while the boat relocates. Afternoon: 1 dive or guided snorkel at a more relaxed site. An optional night dive on longer trips, depending on your certification and conditions.

How a dive is run

You gear up on deck with help from the crew, transfer either directly from the main boat or by small tender, drop in as a group, and follow the dive guide. Briefings are detailed: entry method, maximum depth, expected current direction, emergency procedures, and agreed signals.

Typical snorkeling day rhythm

Early start from Labuan Bajo around 06:30–07:00. Stop 1 at Kelor or similar for a short hike plus easy snorkeling. Stop 2 at Padar for the ridge viewpoint, then back aboard for lunch. Stop 3 at Pink Beach for a shallow coral garden snorkel and beach time. Stop 4 at Manta Point when conditions allow. Final stop at Komodo or Rinca for the ranger-guided dragon walk on some itineraries.

Best for certified divers

A dive-focused liveaboard, where multiple dive days and a gradual progression into Komodo currents are built into the schedule.

Best for snorkelers & mixed groups

A 2D1N or 3D2N from Labuan Bajo. You still fit Padar, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Kelor, plus several coral-rich sites around central Komodo.

Families & newer swimmers

Life jackets for every water activity, a crew member beside less confident snorkelers, and snorkel stops that are entirely optional. The headline moments happen on land or from the deck.

Two Structures

Two Main Ways to Do It

Option A 15:00

Liveaboard from Bali (Benoa) to Komodo

Benoa Harbour, in the south of Bali, is the main cruise and expedition port. Larger small ships and several phinisi liveaboards use the Benoa Cruise Ship Terminal / North Jetty as their embarkation point. Typical embarkation is around 15:00; disembarkation in Labuan Bajo around 08:00, often with transfers to Komodo Airport. State ships take approximately 36 hours Benoa to Labuan Bajo; private and liveaboard cruises usually run 7–12 days, calling at islands between Bali and Flores. Typical routes might include sections along Lombok, Sumbawa, Moyo and Satonda, and then into Komodo National Park.

Option B <1 hr

Fly to Labuan Bajo, Then Boat to Komodo

For many travelers, especially with limited holiday time, the practical way is to fly Denpasar (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) in generally under one hour, then board a day trip or 2–4 day liveaboard. Common durations: a day trip roughly 06:30–17:00; 2D1N departing about 10:00 on day 1 and returning about 18:00 on day 2; 3D2N departing about 10:30 on day 1 and returning around midday on day 3; 4D3N often paired with overland Lombok–Komodo–Flores itineraries.

Preparation

Practical Tips to Prepare

Bring your certification card and logbook if you plan to dive, and tell us your certification level and recent dive count when you enquire — it changes which sites and which boat we recommend.

Snorkel gear is included on every boat we operate, but if you are particular about mask fit, bring your own. Prescription masks are worth packing.

Komodo currents are the reason the marine life is so rich, and the reason briefings matter. Listen to the entry method, depth limit, expected current direction and pick-up signals every single time.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest for long sessions, and a hat
  • A dry bag for electronics, and a power bank — generator hours vary by boat
  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone, 30–60 minutes before departure
  • Cash in rupiah for the park fee: IDR 650,000 (~USD 40) per person

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a certified diver?
Not for our standard trips — the snorkel stops at Manta Point, Pink Beach, Kanawa and Taka Makassar need no certification. If you want to dive, tell us your certification level and recent dive count, and we will recommend a dive-focused liveaboard with a schedule built around dive days.
How is a typical dive day structured?
A light breakfast and dive briefing at 06:00–07:00, one or two morning dives at current-sensitive sites when conditions allow, lunch and rest while the boat relocates, then one afternoon dive or a guided snorkel at a more relaxed site. Longer trips may add an optional night dive depending on certification and conditions.
Is snorkel gear provided?
Yes — masks, snorkels and fins in multiple sizes, plus life jackets for all guests, included in the price with no rental fees. If you own a prescription mask or favourite fins, bring them.
How strong are the currents for snorkelling?
Komodo's channels are famous for currents, but snorkeling stops are timed around tides and located in protected spots where flow is mild. At Manta Point the boat follows your group's surface marker buoy while you drift. Crews check tide tables daily and skip or reschedule sites when flow is too strong.
Which trip suits a mixed group of divers and snorkelers?
A private charter, or a 3D2N from Labuan Bajo where the itinerary can split: divers go down at a current site while snorkelers take a shallow reef nearby. Tell us the mix when you enquire and we will plan around it.
