Bali to Komodo: Every Way to Get There (Fly, Boat, Tour) 2027

The fastest way from Bali to Komodo is a 1-hour flight from Denpasar (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) from about USD 60–120, then a boat tour into Komodo National Park. Bali Komodo Boat Tour, part of award-winning operator Komodo Luxury (TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2023–2025), also runs a 4D3N boat journey from Lombok from USD 680 per cabin — a slower, more scenic route that includes swimming with whale sharks in Saleh Bay.

Every week our team answers the same message from travelers sitting in a villa in Canggu or Ubud: “We’re in Bali. How do we actually get to Komodo?” It is a fair question, because Komodo National Park is not next door to Bali — it sits roughly 450 km east, across Lombok, Sumbawa, and a long chain of islands, in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. There is no bridge, no direct public ferry that most tourists would enjoy, and no day trip from Bali that is honestly worth doing.

The good news: getting from Bali to Komodo is simple once you understand the three real options. This guide is written by Bali Komodo Boat Tour, a Komodo tour company operating since 2015 as part of Komodo Luxury — an operator with 10+ years of experience, 858+ confirmed bookings, a 4.8-star rating across 152 Google reviews, and TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Around 90% of our guests are international travelers (Italy, France, Spain, UK, Netherlands, US, Australia), and nearly all of them start their journey in Bali. Below is exactly what we tell them.

Bali to Komodo at a Glance: Your 3 Options

Route Travel Time Cost (USD) Cost (IDR) Best For
Option 1: Fly DPS → LBJ + boat tour ~1 hour flight USD 60–120 flight + tour from USD 90 IDR 950K–1.9M + tour from IDR 1.45M Most travelers — fastest and easiest
Option 2: 4D3N boat via Lombok (Saleh Bay whale sharks) 4 days / 3 nights ~USD 1,365 per cabin (2 pax) IDR 22.5M per cabin Adventurers who want the journey itself
Option 3: Overland + public ferries (DIY) 2–4 days, unpredictable ~USD 50–80 in fares ~IDR 800K–1.3M Hardcore backpackers only — not recommended

Let’s break down each one honestly, including what it really costs, how long it really takes, and the mistakes we see travelers make every season.

Option 1: Fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo (The Smart Default)

For roughly 9 out of 10 of our guests, this is the answer. You fly from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ), the small harbor town on the western tip of Flores that serves as the only real gateway into Komodo National Park.

Flight details: DPS to LBJ

Book flights 2–6 weeks ahead in high season. July, August, and the Christmas–New Year window sell out first, and last-minute fares can double. If your Komodo boat departs in the morning, fly into Labuan Bajo the evening before — a delayed same-day flight is the single most common reason travelers miss their boat.

Then what? From Labuan Bajo into the park

Labuan Bajo is the launch point for every Komodo itinerary. From the harbor, you have three main formats, all of which we operate:

If you prefer the whole boat to yourselves, a private Komodo boat tour on Riley runs IDR 65–68M for 4–9 guests over 3D2N, and our flagship luxury Komodo boat tour on Catnazse ranges IDR 103–148M. Compare every vessel on our boats page.

Total cost example: Bali to Komodo by flight + 3D2N tour

Item USD (approx.) IDR
Return flight DPS–LBJ USD 120–240 IDR 1.9M–3.8M
3D2N shared-cabin tour (Malca) USD 215 IDR 3,550,000
Komodo National Park fee ~USD 40 IDR 650,000
Total per person ~USD 375–495 ~IDR 6.1M–8M

That is a realistic all-in figure for a comfortable, well-run 3-day Komodo experience starting and ending in Bali. Full pricing for every format is on our Komodo boat tour prices page.

Option 2: The Bali to Komodo Boat Journey via Lombok (4D3N)

This is the route for travelers who want the crossing itself to be the adventure. Instead of flying over the islands, you sail through them. Our 4D3N Lombok-to-Komodo journey aboard Lady Grace departs from Lombok (a short flight or fast boat from Bali) and sails east along Sumbawa toward Komodo National Park.

What makes this route special

4D3N Lombok–Komodo route: key facts

Detail Information
Vessel Lady Grace
Duration 4 days / 3 nights, Lombok → Labuan Bajo
Price ~USD 1,365 per cabin (IDR 22.5M, 2 pax per cabin)
Highlights Saleh Bay whale shark option, Moyo, Satonda, Padar, Komodo dragons, Pink Beach, Manta Point
Ends in Labuan Bajo — fly back to Bali in 1 hour
Best months April–November

At roughly USD 683 per person sharing a cabin, this route costs more than flying plus a short tour — but it replaces three nights of hotels, three days of meals, and an entire second destination (Sumbawa) in one booking. Read the complete day-by-day plan on our Bali to Komodo boat tour page.

Honest note on comfort: this is an open-water passage. The crossing along Sumbawa is generally calm in the April–November season, but if you are highly prone to seasickness, the fly-then-cruise option keeps you in the sheltered waters inside the park.

Option 3: Overland and Public Ferries (The DIY Route)

For completeness: yes, you can technically travel Bali to Komodo without flying or joining a boat journey. The route looks like this: public ferry Bali (Padang Bai) → Lombok, bus across Lombok, ferry → Sumbawa, a very long bus across Sumbawa (8–10 hours), ferry Sape → Labuan Bajo (7–9 hours). Total fares come to roughly USD 50–80, and total travel time is 2–4 days each way depending on connections.

We include it because travelers ask — but after a decade of operating here, we do not recommend it for most visitors. The Sape–Labuan Bajo ferry schedule changes without notice, seas in the Sape Strait can be rough, the buses are exhausting, and once you finally reach Labuan Bajo you still need a boat tour to enter the park. Unless slow overland travel is the point of your trip, the money you save is small compared to the days you lose. If your budget is the driver, a smarter play is flying on a promo fare and joining a Komodo share trip, where shared cabins keep the 3D2N price at USD 215.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Whichever you choose, all roads lead through Labuan Bajo and onto a boat — because Komodo National Park is a marine park. The dragons live on Komodo and Rinca islands, the mantas glide at Manta Point, and Padar’s three-bay viewpoint is reachable only by sea. Choosing the right Komodo boat tour matters more than any other decision in this trip.

When to Go: Best Season for the Bali–Komodo Route

The best season is April to November — the dry season, when seas are calm, visibility for snorkeling is at its best, and Padar’s hills glow gold. July and August are peak months; book flights and cabins 1–2 months ahead. December to March brings rain and rougher seas; tours still run on many days, but the 4D3N Lombok crossing is best kept to the dry season. Manta rays are present year-round at Manta Point, with especially strong numbers December–February for travelers who do visit in the wet season.

FAQ: Bali to Komodo

How do I get from Bali to Komodo Island?

Fly 1 hour from Denpasar (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) for USD 60–120, then join a boat tour into Komodo National Park — day trips start at USD 90 and 3D2N liveaboards at USD 215. Alternatively, take our 4D3N boat journey via Lombok from IDR 22.5M per cabin.

Is there a direct boat from Bali to Komodo?

There is no direct scheduled passenger boat from Bali harbor to Komodo. The realistic sea route is our 4D3N journey departing from Lombok aboard Lady Grace, sailing along Sumbawa with a Saleh Bay whale shark stop before entering Komodo National Park and finishing in Labuan Bajo.

How much does a Bali to Komodo trip cost in total?

Budget roughly USD 375–495 per person all-in for return flights, a 3D2N shared-cabin liveaboard (USD 215), and the IDR 650,000 (~USD 40) park fee. Day-trip-based visits cost less; private charters from IDR 65M and the 4D3N Lombok route (IDR 22.5M per cabin) cost more.

Can I do Komodo as a day trip from Bali?

Not realistically. Flight schedules make a same-day Bali–Komodo–Bali loop nearly impossible, and you would see almost nothing. Fly to Labuan Bajo, stay at least one night, and take a speedboat day trip from USD 90 — or better, a 2D1N or 3D2N boat tour.

When is the best time to travel from Bali to Komodo?

April to November is the best window — calm seas, dry weather, excellent snorkeling visibility, and reliable conditions for the Lombok–Komodo crossing. July and August are busiest, so book flights and cabins 1–2 months ahead. Manta sightings at Manta Point are good year-round.

Do I need to book the flight and boat tour separately?

You book your DPS–LBJ flight directly with the airline, and your boat tour with us — we then align pickup and departure times with your flight. Message us on WhatsApp before buying flights and we’ll confirm which arrival times safely connect with your chosen itinerary.
