Standard Komodo Tour Durations
Because the DPS–LBJ flight is under an hour, you use Bali mainly as the international entry point and cut out long sea days entirely.
Day Trip (full day)
Typical timing 06:30–17:00. Often hits two or three key spots: Padar sunrise, a dragon walk on Komodo or Rinca, then snorkeling at Pink Beach or Manta Point if conditions allow.
2D1N (2 days / 1 night)
Depart around 10:00, return about 18:00 the next day. A good balance: one night on the boat, three to five sites including Padar, Komodo, Pink Beach, and one or two snorkeling stops like Manta Point or Kelor.
3D2N (3 days / 2 nights)
Depart around 10:30 on day 1, return roughly 12:00–13:00 on day 3. Allows a more relaxed pace with multiple dives or snorkel sessions and sunrise and sunset at different islands.
4D3N
Sometimes part of overland Lombok–Komodo–Flores trips; gives more flexibility for weather, extra dive and snorkel sites, and a less rushed feeling around the dragons and viewpoints.

Three Scenarios to Help You Decide
Onboard life on a liveaboard is typically very structured and slow-paced: two to four water sessions per day, plus easy island walks, beach time and occasional village visits, with lots of time to read, sunbathe on deck and watch sunsets at sea.
Scenario A — "I have two weeks and love being on boats"
Take the Benoa liveaboard. Islands and bays in East Bali and around Lombok, snorkeling and diving around the Gilis or lesser-known reefs, traditional villages along Sumbawa, reefs with good chances of turtles and reef sharks, and the final days around Komodo National Park.
Scenario B — "I am in Bali for a week and just want the Komodo highlights"
Fly to Labuan Bajo and take the 3D2N. Breakfast in Bali, land late morning, and be on a boat into Komodo waters before lunch. You still get Padar, Pink Beach, dragons and Manta Point.
Scenario C — "We are a family with mixed ages and limited tolerance for long crossings"
Fly, then cruise — and consider a private charter so you set the pace. Crossings inside the park are short and the waters are mostly protected, unlike the open-sea legs on a Benoa route.
Cabins across both options
From simple fan cabins with shared bathrooms at the budget end, to air-conditioned en-suite cabins with hotel-style beds in the mid to high range. Three daily meals, often buffet style or set menus, with tea, coffee and snacks between activities.
Vessel styles
Some vessels are classic phinisi wooden schooners, others are modern expedition yachts. Both dive-focused and more relaxed expedition-cruising versions exist.
Frequencies
Multiple daily DPS–LBJ departures in high season, with reduced but regular services in shoulder season. Benoa liveaboard schedules are seasonal and vessel-specific.
Practical Notes
Time, Budget, and Comfort
Time available is the first filter. Under five days and the Benoa route simply does not fit; a week or more and it becomes a genuine option.
Budget is the second. A liveaboard requires a bigger total commitment, though per night and per activity it can be efficient.
Comfort and sea conditions are the third. Crossings inside Komodo National Park are short and mostly sheltered; the open-water legs between Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa are not. If you are prone to seasickness, that difference matters more than any price.
