What to Pack for a Komodo Boat Tour: Complete Checklist

Packing for a Komodo boat tour is different from packing for a beach holiday in Bali. You will spend one to four days on a boat in a remote national park with no shops, no pharmacies, and — on most itineraries — no reliable phone signal. Whatever you forget stays forgotten until you return to Labuan Bajo. The good news: after helping guests board more than 858 trips since 2015, we know exactly what people wish they had brought, what they never touched, and what the boat already provides so you do not have to carry it. This checklist covers all of it, category by category.

The Golden Rule: One Soft Bag, Packed Light

Boat cabins are compact, and storage space is limited even on premium phinisi like Ayvara or Lady Grace. Bring a soft duffel or backpack, not a hard-shell suitcase — soft bags tuck under beds and into lockers, while rigid suitcases end up occupying half your cabin floor. For a day trip you need only a small daypack. For a 3D2N liveaboard, a 40–50 liter bag is plenty. Most guests can leave their main luggage safely at their Labuan Bajo hotel or at our office and board with essentials only. If you are joining our Bali to Komodo program, the same rule applies — pack a boat bag separately from your Bali luggage.

Documents and Money

Clothing: Less Than You Think

Komodo is hot, dry, and windy from April to November. You will live in swimwear and light layers, and nobody dresses up on a boat. For a 3D2N trip, this is genuinely enough:

Footwear: Two Pairs Only

Sun and Reef Protection

The Komodo sun is stronger than most visitors expect — you are on open water near the equator with reflection off the sea doubling your exposure. This category is where forgetting something actually hurts:

Snorkeling and Water Gear

Here is where you can pack light, because the boat covers most of it (see the next section). Bring only:

Health and Toiletries

Electronics and Power

What the Boat Provides (So You Don’t Have To)

Every vessel in our fleet — from the value-friendly Malca to premium phinisi like Ayvara, Naturalia, and Lady Grace, and private charters such as Riley and Catnazse — includes the following, so leave these at home:

If you have a dietary requirement, tell our team on WhatsApp when you book — the chef provisions before departure, and vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-aware menus are arranged at no extra cost when we know in advance.

Quick Checklist by Trip Length

Day trip (from USD 90): daypack, swimsuit, T-shirt, trekking shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, dry bag, cash for park fees, seasickness tablet, water bottle. That is the entire list.

2D1N or 3D2N liveaboard (share cabins from USD 215): everything above, plus two more swimsuits, long pants, windbreaker, sarong, toiletries, power bank, medication, and a change of clothes for the trip home.

Private charter, 3–4 days: the 3D2N list works; add whatever makes the boat feel like yours — a drone (ask your guide about park rules first), a good book, snacks you cannot live without.

Three Things Guests Most Often Forget

  1. Cash for park fees — the number one issue at the harbor. Withdraw the day before.
  2. Motion sickness tablets — easy to dismiss until hour two of a rolling crossing.
  3. A strap for hat and sunglasses — the wind on the bow is relentless and the sea does not give things back.

Final Word

Pack light, pack soft, and prioritize sun protection over fashion — that is the entire philosophy. The boat handles food, water, snorkel gear, and bedding; you handle documents, cash, medication, and whatever keeps you comfortable in strong sun. If you are unsure whether a specific item is worth bringing, our FAQ page answers the most common questions, or simply message us on WhatsApp — our team replies fast and has answered every version of “should I bring…?” since 2015. See you at the harbor with one soft bag and a charged camera.
